Background: I’m a seismologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). I study crustal seismology with a focus on earthquake source physics to examine how one earthquake triggers another. I love to explore things that have never been explored before. When I was a kid one of my favorite things to do was, with friends, ride my banana-seat bike around the neighborhood with the explicit goal to ‘get lost’. I adored trying to figure out where we were and how to get where we wanted to go. Whenever possible I try and instill in people, of all ages, this thrill of discovery. My latest passion is to team up with scientists from different disciplines and explore the sweet-spot where our disciplines just barely intersect -- I think it is these unexplored edges where the true leaps in science will be made.
Education: I completed a post-doc at Princeton University (1999-2001) after I obtained my Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Memphis (1999), a Masters in Mathematics from UCLA (1992) and a Bachelors in Mathematics/Computer Science from UCSD (1986).
